Understanding Anger for Youth

understand-anger-management-teens

It is normal to feel angry at times. But when is anger, irritability, and aggression unhealthy for a child? If they feel angry almost every day and it affects their daily life, then anger could be a problem.

Low self-esteem, bullying, trauma, and divorce are some factors that can contribute to anger in teens. It’s not the anger itself that’s a problem, but the inability to deal with it effectively and constructively.

In this course, your child will learn self-awareness skills to take back control of their emotions.

Who can attend?

The class is for youth aged 13 – 17 experiencing anger issues and aggression. Parental consent is needed.

Parents do not attend this class.

What will you learn?

You will learn how to address anger as a normal, healthy emotion by understanding:

  • Effects of anger on the brain
  • What is anger and how to manage anger
  • Functions, symptoms, and signs of anger
  • Factors that contribute to anger in youth or teens (such as development, stress, lack of support, feeling misunderstood or not heard, trauma)
  • Communication strategies, including the following:
    •  “I” messages
    • Active listening
    • DESC communication strategy (describe, express, specify, consequences)

By the end of the session, you will feel more comfortable:

  • Advocating for myself
  • Controlling anger outbursts and using anger management techniques
  • Coping with anger in a healthy way
  • Practicing self-care

When and where is the class offered?

  • The group class is offered several times per year. Scroll down for upcoming dates.
  • You can attend this class online or in person at our office at 9912-106 Street, Edmonton.
  • In our group workshops, you will have many opportunities to ask questions, learn about yourself and your family, hear others’ experiences, and practice new skills. Many people who attend our workshops say they feel better after attending because they realize that they are not alone.
